We are happy to share that our Mathematics teacher, Ksenija Bojchevska, will take part in the EGU General Assembly 2026, one of the largest scientific conferences in Europe in the field of geosciences. The conference will be held from May 3 to 8, 2026, in Vienna, under the theme “Natural Hazards, Human Impact and Earth’s Resources: Shaping Life and Earth.”
Teacher Bojchevska will present her poster, “Mathematical Modelling of Floods: Natural Hazards and Human Impact – How numbers help us understand the world in the era of climate change.”
As part of this work, students were included in the process through two interactive activities. In Flood Probability, they explored how flood risk changes over time and saw how even a small annual risk can become significant over the years. In Urbanization and Flooding, they compared natural and urban surfaces and found that concrete leads to much higher runoff, increasing the risk of flooding.
The project also showed how mathematics connects to ecology. Through simple models and calculations, students could better understand how human actions, like building in urban areas, affect water flow and the environment. In this way, mathematics helps us make sense of real environmental issues and think more carefully about the impact we have on nature.
To present their work, students from AHSS created a short video that captures the whole process and their findings. It’s a great example of their engagement, teamwork, and thoughtful approach to learning.
We are proud of our team and look forward to seeing their work presented on an international stage.
