From Skopje to London: Bisera Drndar’s Journey to Recognition at the John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize 2026

The John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize is a prestigious international academic competition that challenges students to engage with complex questions across disciplines, from philosophy and history to economics and science. Emphasizing intellectual independence, originality, and rigorous argumentation, it brings together young people who are willing to question established ideas and think beyond the boundaries of the standard school curriculum.

In 2026, 100,227 students from 183 countries entered the competition, making it the largest edition in its history. I submitted essays in two categories, History and Science & Technology, and progressed through multiple stages of evaluation, including an English examination and two interviews. Being shortlisted in both categories earned me an official invitation to the 2026 Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner at Grosvenor House, a prestigious hotel in London’s Mayfair, on 3 October.

The ceremony was the culmination of months of intellectual work, anticipation, and evaluation. This black-tie event brought together shortlisted candidates from around the world, alongside members of the John Locke Institute’s academic community, to celebrate outstanding student writing and announce the category winners and overall Grand Prize winner. Being part of an international gathering dedicated to intellectual achievement was an opportunity to connect with students whose interests and ambitions extended far beyond the classroom. My essays received a High Commendation in History and a Commendation in Science & Technology—recognition I am proud to have earned in both categories.

However, the experience extended far beyond the ceremony itself. I spent a week in the United Kingdom, exploring, visiting its landmarks, discovering its culture, and experiencing a place that brings together history, innovation, and people from all over the world. The trip gave me the opportunity to step outside my usual environment, meet students with different backgrounds and perspectives, exchange ideas, and form new friendships. What began as an academic opportunity became a memorable personal adventure, combining international recognition with the excitement of discovering somewhere new.

Looking back, I value not only the distinctions I received but also everything the experience taught me about curiosity, confidence, and personal growth. Travelling to London for an international academic event reminded me that opportunities often begin with something as simple as being willing to try. Submitting an essay, pursuing an unfamiliar challenge, or putting your ideas forward can lead to experiences you could never have anticipated.

My biggest takeaway is this: be willing to try new things, step outside your comfort zone, and challenge yourself, even when you cannot predict the outcome. You do not have to know exactly where an opportunity will lead to take the first step. Sometimes, the experiences that shape you most begin when you dare to do something you have never done before. For me, this journey began in Skopje and led to an international academic stage in London—and it has made me even more determined to keep exploring, learning, and seeing just how far I can go.
