Empowering Learners: Comprehensive Support at AHSS
Shuttle service
To ease the everyday transport of students to school, AHSS offers a shuttle service with a safe and trusted transport service, that runs every day of the week, from Monday to Friday.
Our transportation enables students a regular and safe pick up and drop off at several predefined locations and according to a planned timeline so that parents can be assured that no one is late and everyone is safe. Shuttle routes and points of pick up are not publicly announced. The schedule of the shuttle service also depends on traffic conditions in the city and it can sometimes be late. We kindly ask the parents to be patient and understanding, as it is our primary concern to provide safe transport to school.
Tutoring
We know that every student learns differently and that everyone has their own pace and manner. But still, there are certain necessary educational requirements that need to be accomplished in line with the curriculum and the overall expectations of high school students. We also know that students can easily fall behind due to illness, travel, or longer justified absence from classes, and we also know that there are students who simply need general need for assistance. This is why we organize additional classes to help students accomplish their tasks and gain the necessary skills and knowledge. This is organized by matching students in need of further instructions with tutors and professors. They spend additional time and effort in order to help them cope with the subjects that require greater engagement. The dynamics and organization of the additional classes and the tutoring is determined based on the availability of both students and tutors.
AHSS Buddy Program
Starting high school is a big step. New students are getting used to a different school, new teachers, new classmates and more responsibility. Even when they are excited, it can take time to feel comfortable and find their place. The Buddy Program has been introduced to make that transition a little easier.
Students from Grades 11 and 12 volunteer to support our new and transfer students. They are selected because they are responsible, approachable and willing to help. They help younger students get to know AHSS, find their way around, understand how things work and feel more comfortable asking questions. Sometimes, they may simply be someone to talk to when the first few weeks feel a little overwhelming.
The program is especially important for Grade 9 students, who are moving from elementary to high school. They may be worried about making friends, keeping up with their classes, or finding their place in a new social environment. Having an older student who understands what that feels like can make a real difference.
Our buddies receive guidance on communication, active listening, empathy and handling difficult situations. They are encouraged to listen, ask questions and offer encouragement. They are not expected to have all the answers and they are not counselors. Their role is to be supportive peers and to help students find the right person when they need more support.
We also want our buddies to feel supported. Through regular supervision meetings with the school psychologist or mentor, they have a safe space to discuss challenges, ask questions, reflect on their experiences and develop their mentoring skills. They also learn how to respond when a student is facing a more serious concern, including when to involve a trusted adult.
The program is supported by our school staff, who help guide the buddies and make sure students have the support they need. We also welcome feedback from both buddies and younger students so that we can continue improving the program. The Buddy Program is about helping students feel less alone, building connections across grades, and making AHSS a place where students look out for one another.
Sometimes, having someone who knows the school and is happy to help is all you need.
